Pildammsparken

THE INTERVIEW

What’s your name?

How old are you?

What’s your purpose in Pildammsparken?

How often do you come here?

Why do you like Pildammsparken?

What is your favorite part of the park?

Is this your favorite park in Malmö? Why/why not?

Is this a good place to “hang”?

Christopher Jacobsson

17 years old

He goes to John Bauer School with a focus on hockey. The reason why he was in Pildammsparken was because he had to improve his condition to next hockey-season.

He comes to the park five times a week to jog. He prefers to jog in “The Hills” because it´s quit, calm and it has nice views. He thinks it´s the best park in Malmo but not the best place to “hangout” with friends, but maybe in the summertime for BBQ.

Elin Berthoven

33 years old

The reason why she’s in the park is for just taking a walk with her son in his stroller.

She thinks it´s a beautiful park especially in the summertime because of all the flowers.

Her favorite thing to do in the park is to walk by the big pond.

She says that Pildammsparken is a good place to have picnic with friends and family but sometimes there’s too much bird poop so she prefers Kungsparken. She also thinks that Pildammsparken is too big and not as cosy as Kungsparken.

Pildammsaparken is a nice park in the central of Malmö, it's the place to be! Or not really, but it´s a very beautiful park and the nature is remarkable. The park is used by joggers, kindergardengroups, old persons that plays boule, "picnicers", walking people with their dogs, teenagers that doing gymnastik and parents with their children.

Some facts about Pildammsparken:

  • The park’s size is 45 hektar.
  • The name Pildammsparken is comes from the time as the town got her water from the lake. In this time the lake was tryed to protect with trees, the “Pil”.
  • It consist of a big lake with an island inside for the waterbirds next do this lake is a hill with the old water tower of the town. Today it's a museum.
  • There is an amphitheater too. Around the stage are some hills that are used by joggers and other sporty people for training.
  • In the west is a litte forest with a round grassfield inside. In the nord of the Pildammsparken is an other pond, it’s much smaler than the lake. Two streets are through the park. One of them ends in the middle in a parking.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE CENTRAL STATION IN MALMÖ

Malmö’s central station is the third biggest in Sweden and every year the central station is visited by about 17 million travellers. The central station works as booth a bus- and train station. Recently the central station was renovated, which means that there’s now a underground train station as well. It also means that there are a lot of new restaurants and shops. The most unique thing about the our central station is probably the “video-slide” which is considered as art and is placed in the underground station.

Here is our interview at the Central Station in Malmö.

Hi Kerstin! Can you tell us about yourself?

Sure. My name is Kerstin Hermodsson and I’m 48 years old. I work as an employee in a flower shop here at the Central Station in Malmö.

Can you describe a normal day here at the Central Station?

A normal day at work for me can be very stressful. There are so many people here, and it’s quite loud. I stand in the shop all my work time except for when I have lunch, then I can go around and choose what to eat, there are so many restaurants here now! I try to vary my lunches but I often end up in the “Street food” court, they have amazing onion rings. My work is not only to sell flowers to travellers and their relatives and friends, a chore that often comes up is to help confused foreigners to find their way in here (it’s easy to get lost) and since I’m kind of an expert nowadays, I’m glad to help them.

What is your favourite place in the Central Station?

My flower shop of course! Just kidding, I like it but you sometimes can get bored when you don’t get a lot of customers. Anyway, I like Starbucks; their coffee is both awakening and delicious!

Welcome to Möllan

The statue that represents the honour of the work!

Möllan

Möllevångstorget is the place to go if you’re in Malmö. It consists of many bars and fruit stands. Möllan, short for Möllevångstorget, has loads of different cultural types of restaurants, such as Middle Eastern, Indian, Asian, and Swedish.

Bodil Nilsson that works at one of the flower stands says, ”It’s very culturally mixed, which I think is good. The people that work here are friendly and we get along well.”

The square itself isn’t that old. One hundred years ago Möllan, as we know it today, was only a piece of land surrounded by a few industrial factories that you can see today. In the beginning of the 20th century, buildings were built because the workers from the factories needed somewhere to live. This was the beginning of Möllevångstorget.

The big statue on the square is called ”Arbetes ära”, in English, ”Honour to the work.” The artist Axel Ebbe wanted to show how cooperation builds and keeps society together.

Unfortunately Malmö’s criminality has affected Möllan. With the bars open until early hours and crime just around the corner, Möllevångstorget isn’t the best place to be at night. Just last summer a man was shot dead in an apartment due to gang related issues.  However, it’s definitely a place you have to visit day-time!

You can find Christians, Muslims, atheists and so on… We interviewed people from many different countries, for example people who originally are from Iraq and Iran.

All people we talked to said that the segregation was something positive but you could notice that some of them had a problem with it, even if they didn’t say it out loud. So a problem is that the people in Malmö are split up, the immigrants and the swedes.

So it’s not only good things about Malmö. A lot of the people agreed that there is too much criminality in Malmö and they found the shooting in Malmö very scary. One person even said that she never goes out alone in Malmö during the evenings because she’s too scared.

Treasure hunt trail

For the past few days we have been walking through the city, taking pictures of details of famous places.
Take our quiz here and find out how much you know about Malmö!

Can you guess where this owl belongs?

By: Amina, Rita, Maxim, Evelina and Salomé

How well do you know Malmö?

Our topic was Treasure Hunt Trail and we had to walk through the city and take pictures of details of special places without revealing the whole place. For each picture we had to write a clue so it wouldn’t be too difficult for people to guess what place we have photographed. We interviewed two young students from S: t Petri high school to see how much they really know about the city that they live in.  We decided to interview a boy and a girl to see the difference.

The first interview we did was with Aleksandra Dimovska, a 17-year-old girl from SA11A. Aleksandra have lived in Malmö her entire life.

The second person we interviewed was Henrik Säll Nilsson, 16 years old from class SA11C. Henrik has also lived in Malmö his entire life.

The questions we asked was:

1. What do you think about the city?

2. How much do you think you know about Malmö?

3. Do you think you could find places in the city just by seeing a small part of it on a picture?

Aleksandra answered:

1. I think it’s a lovely city because we have kept the culture and old buildings. I like the people who live here.

2. I think I know pretty much about Malmö sense I’ve lived here so long.

3. Yes, I think so.

When we did the quiz on Aleksandra she got 8 out of 10 correct answers.

Henrik answered:

1. I think it’s a small town but it’s perfect for me.

2. I don’t think I know Malmö very good.

3. Yes.

Henrik also got 8 out of 10 right answers.

This shows us that there is no difference between the knowledge of a girl and a boy in our age. The both know their city pretty well.

Can you guess where this is?

A clue: Symphony

A clue: Our rivals

A clue: Electic

A clue: In a park close to S:t Petri.

A clue: This is for kids.

A clue: Improving knowledge.

A clue: You all see in the morning.

A clue: Ghosts

A clue: King

A clue: Money

Photo safari group J " Västra hamnen"

Hi this is our photo safari about "Västra hamnen".

One of the places that we decided to document was the famous building Turning torso.

It was built during the years 2001-2005. It is 190 meters high, has 54 stories and is famous for its twisted architecture.

In “Västra hamnen” there are a lot of restaurants and among them is one called “Salt och brygga”.

If you want to relax or get a good workout then Kockum fritid is the place for you. Here you can swim, ice skate, play tennis, yoga, sunbath and do many other things.

We got very excited when we got “Västra hamnen” as our topic because it´s a wonderful place to hang out with friends or family and to enjoy the beautiful view.

We asked a few people what they thought of “Västra hamnen” and what they thought was important for a tourist to see.

·      What do you like best about “Västra hamnen”?

·      What do you like least about “Västra hamnen”?

·      Are you here often?

·      What place in Västra hamnen would you recommend a tourist to see?

·      What’s your favorite restaurant/café here?

This is what they said:

1.     I think that the best part of “Västra hamnen” is the café Espresso House.

2.     The thing that I like least about it is that it is so windy all the time. Because of the wind it gets cold.

3.     I´m here quite often. Everyday if I’m working but even though I’m free I’m here three or four times a week.

4.     Food wise I would recommend Espresso House but the most important attraction would be the famous building Turning torso.

5.      My favorite café is of course Espresso House.

Jacqueline Swärd

1.     It’s so fricking windy.

2.     It’s so fricking windy. *Laughing*

3.     Everyday but I never come here if I don’t have to. I only come here to work.

4.     I would say that the Turning torso is the most important thing to see.

5.     I don’t know of many restaurants but the one that I do know of has awful food so I would have to say Ica Maxi.

Johan Böös

This is the famous building Turning torso.

Ribersborg!

Ribersborg is one of the most beautiful places in Malmö, where you’re close to everything; the beach, called ”Ribban”, the city-center, Turning Torso and the skate park. It’s one of the most attractive places to live right now.

Ribersborgs is also a center for the training-interested; the joggers, the footballers and the horse-riders all come here to exercise and to do their sports. Especially in the summer, there’s many outside activities: gym-programs, American football-games, dog-agility and the annual Malmö City Horse Show.

The beach is a popular place for barbecues, parties and a great place to hang out at in Malmö.  If you don’t want to make your own food you can eat at Restaurant Ribersborg, the only restaurant in the neighborhood. If you’re not that hungry there’s many small candy stands with ice cream and other sweets along the beach walk.

When we interviewed a 25-year old woman she said that Ribersborg was good for the kids and she like it very much. She likes it especially in the summer and she often goes there to take a swim and just hang out with her family. The kids love it because they can clime on the trees and run around.

So if you want to have a wonderful time, come to Ribersborg!

Statues and official monuments in Malmö

Malmo is a city not only known for its criminality and violence, but also by its beautiful surroundings. A big part of this is the statues and monuments all over the city. Through the statues you get a picture of Sweden and Malmo’s history. For example Karl X Gustav sitting on his horse looking over “Stortorget” keeping his people safe from the Danish.

As a Tourist these are the kind of statues you notice. With the help of our guide we hope to help you explore and enjoy the history of Malmo’s monuments and statues. Maybe you would be surprised to find out these facts.

We decided to interview one of the Swedish students and one of the German students to get a youth perspective of the monuments in Malmö

The first interview is with the Swedish student Vanillia Hinderot Flogin:

What is your favourite monument or statue in Malmo?

My favourite statue is the Deers made by Ernst Billgren, in slotssparken

Why?

It’s pretty and is placed on a great spot.

Do you know what It actually stands for?

It just looks nice and I’m not going to analyse the deers.

Our next interview was with the German student Lisa-Marie Klauck

What is your favourite monument or statue in Malmo?

My favourite is the Lighthouse

Why?

In Germany we don’t have that many lighthouses

Do you know what It actually stands for?

Just to warn the boats.

We thank our fabulous guests for being so pretty and kind. Here is some pictures from our adventerous photo safari:

"Arbetets söner" (Sons of the work by Axel Vebbe) stands at the Möllevång's square. A reminder of hard work for us lazy kids.
"Människan och Pegasus" (The human and the Pegasus by Carl Milles) in Slottsparken symbolizes the free thought.
Liggende pige (Lying girl by Gerhard Henning). While in Slottsparken you can rest your eyes on this beauty and unlike Industrigatan it's for free!
Pojke med gäss (Boy with geese by Tomas Qvarsebo) is another piece of art in Slottsparken.
Bigger men are found on Stortorget. The statue of king Karl X Gustav on his horse is made by John Börjesson.
When leaving Stortorget you might see this little orchestra. It's called Optimistorkestern (The optimist-orchestra by Yngve Lundell).
When you made your way to Gustav Adolf's square you'll see quite a lot of fountains and different statues. Here we are taking a closer look on the big ball someone dropped here.
Lekande barn (Playing children by Anders Jönsson) is also situated at Gustav Adolf's torg.
Ending our trip, you can sit down by this little cat at Kanaltrappan. The cats are made out of bronze and there's quite a few of them on the stairs. The artist is Ulla Kraitz.

Happy day together in Sweden.

What to do for 50 SEK in Malmo

We have thought about many things to do in Malmö for fifty SEK, mostly things like food (kebab, falafel, bread, cookies, cupcakes, soda etc.) but there is actually more things to do in Malmö.

You can take a bath at the river, even though it is kind of cold and disgusting. You can go jogging in the parks around Malmö, you can even feed the ducks.

It’s actually hard to find anything to buy because everything is expensive in Sweden, also to visit places like Aq-va-kul. (Aqua Fun). Therefore our list is more of things you can do outside and different food.

We think there are a lot of free things to do in Malmö, but those things are free for a reason. They are boring. So we decide to buy bread for the ducks and the homeless.

When we walked around Malmö we discussed what to do with 50 SEK and everyone said kebab at first, then when we were supposed to interview someone and Vera Rönngard said “Go and get a coffee with a friend”. So we decided that the main thing you can do for 50 SEK is to eat and drink.

If you are a foreigner you can just walk around in Malmö, or take the bus (which is cheap), and watch old buildings, new buildings, old people, Zlatans house. There are a lot of things to you can for example watch a football match.

What we now have discovered, is that 50 SEK is not much, but you may eat or drink something if you don’t want to do stuff for free. Here are some examples for what you can do for 50 SEK:

You can eat kebab and falafel at the Super Falafel for 50 SEK.
You can eat Kebab and Falafel for 50 SEK.
You can give food to the homeless for 50 SEK.
You can eat a lunch beef at Jensen's Bofhus for 50 SEK.
You can go to the library for free!
You can eat 5 cheeseburgers for 50 SEK.
You can chase the ducks for free!
You can take a bath in the river for free, even though it's cold and disgusting!
You can feed the ducks for 50 SEK.
